Mian Iftikhar Hussain

Central General Secretary

Mian Iftikhar Hussain, born on April 15th, 1958, is a Pakistani Politician and currently serving as a Secretary-General of the Awami National Party (ANP). He was born in Nowshehra Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Early Education:

Mian Iftikhar Hussain obtained his early education from Azad Islamia School at Nowshehra. The said school was established by Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan aka Bacha Khan. He then completed his 10th-grade schooling from Islamia Collegiate School, Intermediate and Bachelors from Government College Peshawar, and then Masters in Social Work from the University of Peshawar in 1979. He also obtained a Master in Pashto Literature from the University of Peshawar. He married in 1979 and his only son Mian Rashid Hussain (Shaheed) was born in 1980.

Political Career:

Mian Iftikhar Hussain started his political career as a worker of the Pashtun Students Federation (PSF) during his school time. During the Ayub Khan’s regime, he was part of the movement for the supremacy of Parliament and restoration of Democracy. He joined Pashtun Students Federation formally in 1973 while studying in Government College Peshawar and became the President of the said college when he was a student of 3rd Year. During the Students’ Union Election of 1979, he was a candidate for the President of the Government College but didn’t succeed in the contest. This election campaign made him a speaker who can speak to thousands of crowds. He also remained a part of the movement against the Zia-ul-Haq regime and remained behind bars in different prisons of the province including DI Khan, Peshawar, Haripur, Bannu, and Mardan. When the ban was imposed on the Students’ Union, he made the PSF an active federation in Gomal University. He was elected as a Provincial President of the Pashtun Students Federation in 1980 and then Central President of PSF in 1986. Mian Iftikhar Hussain was then instructed by the party to join Awami National Party and contest from his hometown for the Provincial Assembly Elections in 1988, but he lost. Mian Iftikhar Hussain went to the United States of America after losing the elections but returned in 1989. He won the Provincial Assembly seat in the 1990 elections and was made the Chairman of the District Advisory Committee (DDAC). He lost the 1993 elections with a very low margin of 149 votes but retained his seat in the 1997 General Elections. Mian Iftikhar Hussain, along with (Late) Begum Nasim Wali Khan and (Late) Haji Adeel moved the resolution of Pakhtunkhwa (renaming NWFP) in the Provincial Assembly. He was also a Parliamentary Secretary to Begum Nasim Wali Khan during this tenure. Mian Iftikhar Hussain won his seat from PK-12 Nowshehra, in 2008 and was given the portfolio of Education Minister and then the Minister for Information, Transport and Culture. During this tenure, the war against terror was on peak, and he was the spokesperson of the ANP led Govt. He was in the frontline during all this tenure while dialogues with the terrorists, Peace agreement and then after every incident, he had to face the media. He was targeted many times and still has the threat to his life. He lost his only son, Mian Rashid Hussain Shaheed, on July 24th, 2012 during this war against terror, but still, he is facing all the dangers despite threats to his life. He was also the first Spokesperson of the Opposition alliance formed on September 20th, 2020 against the PTI led Federal Government with the name of the Pakistan Democratic Movement. Currently, he is serving as Secretary-General of the Awami National Party.
