Mian Iftikhar Hussain, Minister of Education (designate) and General Secretary Awami National Party, got primary education at Islamia Arabia Public School at Pabbi. This school was then run by the Khudai Khidmatgar Movement under the guidance of Fakhr-e-Afghan Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, known as Bacha Khan. This school was distinguished by its inauguration at the hands of Maulana Hussain Ahmad Madani, Principal Administrator of Dev Band Seminary in India, at the invitation of Bacha Khan.

Mian Iftikhar was a student at the Government College, Peshawar, when he joined the Pukhtun Students Federation in 1978. The Federation had been formed in 1973. In 1979, he contested election to the presidency of PSF but failed.
Mian Iftikhar joined the Peshawar University in 1980. The same year, he won election to become the provincial president of the Pukhtun Student Federation.
Mian Iftikhar remained behind the bars several times during his study in 1983-87 for taking active part in agitation against the Marital Law of General Zia-ul-Haq.
In 1986, Mian Iftikhar won the election to become the central president of the Pukhtun Students Federation.
In 1988, he joined the Awami National Party.
In general elections in 1993 and 2002, Mian Iftikhar failed to win the seat of provincial assembly from his home constituency. He won the seat in 1990, 1997 and 2008.
In the party, Mian Iftikhar Hussain has held portfolios of Office Secretary, Deputy General Secretary and Secretary for Information. Now he is General Secretary.
Mian Iftikhar Hussain was earlier education minister has been assigned the task of Information and Inter Provincial Coordination. (2008)
