PESHAWAR, May 22 (APP): NWFP Minister for Information and Inter-Provincial Coordination, Mian Iftikhar Hussain Thursday urged the print and electronic media professionals to play their due role in highlighting the positive aspects of Swat peace pact singed by the NWFP government and local Taliban with regular intervals for making it a success.
“Media can play an effective role to educate and inform people within and outside the country about the various aspects of the Swat peace pact as its success is the achievement of people of NWFP, Pakistan and international community,” Mr Ifitkhar told a press conference here at Information Media Centre.
He urged the media men and intellectuals to regularly write editorial, reports, columns and feature articles on different aspects of the landmark peace pact to remove the concerns of international community.
“It is our common goal to bring peace to the restive parts of the NWFP and FATA. It is the responsibility of every patriotic citizen, political forces and intelligentsia to raise voices in favour of the Swat peace pact achieved after long deliberation and struggle.”
The Information Minister said the situation of Swat was different from the restive areas of FATA and international community, which is expressing some concerns over the pact, will accept it with passage of time as it in the interest of every body.
“We suffered a lot due to terrorism and extremism as people gives us mandate for establishing durable peace to Swat and other restive areas.”
The agreement with defunct Tehrik-e-Nafaz-e-Shariat Muhammadi (TNSM) chief Sufi Muhammad and Swat pact after peace talks would help restore peace to the Malakand Division especially in Swat, he added.
To a question about cases against rebellious cleric, Maulana Fazalullah, the Minister said the decisions in this regard will be taken after its thorough review and evaluation. He said that NWFP government is holding dialogue with concerned quarters with sincerity.
Asked about talks with militants in FATA, the Information Minister said that tribal had rendered great sacrifices during the creation and strengthening of Pakistan and said that peace can be restored in the troubled areas of FATA if the federal government take NWFP government on board in process of negotiation.
He said if peace prevails in FATA its positive effects will also fall on Afghanistan. He thanked all those people, elder of local Taliban who help reach the agreement and cabinet members for making the pact a success.
He said that what can the government do now as the Taliban had accepted in the fifteen point peace agreement that they will eliminate training camps, not attack against security forces and government installations, ban on display of unlicensed arms, allowing working women to work, will not create any hurdles in ways of government in the campaigns against deadly diseases like Polio and will not raise private militia.
He said that ANP was against interference in the affairs of each others’ countries. He said that it would be extremely unfortunate if Swat peace agreement can’t succeed.
Mian Iftikhar while responding to a question said that security forces would be gradually withdrew if complete peace returned to Swat.
